We Built This Began with The conviction that diversity is essential to the future of the skilled trades
This story begins with a young woman hired as a carpentry apprentice. She worked for two years before another woman was hired. Until that moment, she had no idea what she had been missing. Now the burden of creating space in a male-dominated field was shared.
Soon there were more women on the crew. More voices demanding change. The first Introduction to Carpentry workshop in 2020 was an effort to bring the participants into a safe and inclusive learning environment to encourage more women to join the trades.
Support grew and people of all genders, minority groups, ethnicities and abilities were asking for an inclusive space where they could learn, too. Together, the community rebranded to create an environment that anyone felt comfortable learning in. After all, women are not the only ones facing barriers to entry in this industry.
We Built This welcomes ALL people to carpentry.

Anna works hard to facilitate the development of useful, engaging, and inclusive workshop content. She hopes these collaborations can change the construction industry in Maine for the better. Anna works full-time in construction and runs We Built This in her “spare” time. Bringing the community together to pass on skills is more rewarding than she ever imagined it would be.
